This activity has been adapted from resources created for the Space Academy Applied Sciences KS3 masterclass. In this activity students investigate the CO2 concentration of three different samples and try to identify their source. The context of the experiment can be linked to either planetary/exoplanetary atmospheres, or to climate change.

The Environmental Effects of Carbon Dioxide

What do we look like in the thermal infra red?

January 15, 2013 | Posted in Demonstrations, Educational Resources, Experiments | By

The following experiments and demos investigate the effect of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide in

i) our atmosphere
In this demonstration, the basics of the electromagnetic spectrum are first covered followed by a demonstration of the thermal infra red. The final demo shows the effect that the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide has on our atmosphere as it absorbs thermal infra red radiation.

ii) our oceans
Under supervision, students (or the public) can conduct this experiment on ocean acidification.

Asteroid Ice Cream

January 2, 2013 | Posted in Demonstrations, Educational Resources | By

This demo allows you to create an edible analogue of a carbonaceous asteroid akin to the Moons of Mars or the parent of the carbonaceous meteorites. This simple demo has the wow factor and is suitable for both family shows and is a good finale for a space-themed masterclasses. This demo is successfully delivered as part of University of Leicester open days and planetary science outreach programme. In addition it is delivered during family shows and events at the National Space Centre, Leicester.

I have made an instructional video on how to make Asteroid Ice Cream. This was filmed during an A-Level planetary geology masterclass for the 2013 Astrobiology Summer Academy at the UK Centre for Astrobiology.

This activity was developed with funding from a UK Space Agency Space for All grant 2012/13.
